Co-existing, collaborating, borrowing, stealing, and sharing have all contributed to the dynamic, fluid identities of the Mediterranean, especially in Cyprus, a region marked by centuries of colonization.
For the Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennial, Odysseos concentrated on knowledge-sharing processes, aiming to foster conversations, layer interpretations, and challenge the assumed rigidity of information.
In response to the Biennial’s theme “School of Waters,” the artist envisioned water as a symbol of perpetual motion—both gentle and powerful. Mark Fischer’s description of the weird aptly parallels her understanding of water: “a Thing which is both terrible and alluring, which can no longer be libidinally classified as either positive or negative. The Thing overwhelms, it cannot be contained but it fascinates.”
The paintings presented in San Marino reflect a nuanced perception of water, curating a constellation of symbolic references that span from medieval iconography to contemporary feminist sexuality. These works address the rich history of allegorical painting across time and space, weaving together diverse influences into an (in)cohesive narrative.
